The Moral Psychology of Depravity

James Gibson gives his thoughts on one of Leighton’s ‘arguments’ against Calvinism. The article unpacks the fact that Leighton exercises his ability to eisegete the issue of election into Mark 10 and misrepresents a common Calvinist understanding of Total Depravity. The article is a good insight on how to frame Total Depravity while talking to a traditionalist.

I think one issue is that the passage is problematic for the traditionalist. Why would it be more difficult for a Rich man to enter the kingdom of God? Doesn’t a rich person have libertarian freedom? If what Flowers believe is true, then Jesus is wrong in teaching that it is more difficult for a rich man to enter the kingdom. A rich man could simply choose whimsically to believe the gospel. The fact of the matter is that Jesus wasn’t a libertarian and a libertarian reading of the same passage doesn’t fit.
